In June 2025, something historic happened in Abuja’s Arts & Culture Village. A 4,000-seat cultural arena, the MEFA Arena was unveiled, creating a space as bold as the talent it was built to host.

For decades, Nigerian creatives have fought for spaces big enough to hold their art and their audiences.

Now, for the first time in the nation’s capital, there’s a dedicated venue designed to do just that.

And at the heart of it all is Honourable Minister Hannatu Musa Musawa, whose vision for the creative economy goes far beyond ribbon-cutting ceremonies.

The MEFA Arena didn’t arrive in isolation. It’s part of a broader creative infrastructure strategy under Musawa’s ministry. Alongside the arena, two major programs were launched:

The Creative Economy Development Fund (CEDF): Designed to provide financing for startups, production companies, and cultural entrepreneurs who often struggle to access capital.
The Creative Leap Acceleration Program (CLAP): Targeted at scaling up festivals, cultural projects, and innovative businesses into global exports, turning local creativity into international soft power.

Together, these initiatives signal a shift: from seeing creative work as “side hustles” to treating them as legitimate economic drivers.

In 2019, Nigeria’s creative industries employed 3.2 million people — about 6% of the workforce (UNCTAD).

Nollywood is the second-largest film industry in the world, employing over a million Nigerians.

Afrobeats is now a global export worth millions, with Nigerian artists selling out arenas in New York, London, and Paris.

Yet at home, creatives often lack the physical infrastructure to match their global ambitions.

The MEFA Arena, and the programs surrounding it, aim to close that gap. It’s not just about having a stage, it’s about building an ecosystem where creativity creates jobs, identity, and national pride.
