10 Things ART X Lagos Taught Us About Creativity This Year

If you ever needed proof that Lagos knows how to celebrate art with style, confidence, and the kind of energy that makes you forget what time it is, the 10th edition of ART X Live took that responsibility seriously.

From the moment guests stepped into the space, it felt like the city had opened its creative heartbeat to the world.

This edition welcomed, entertained, challenged, inspired, and reminded everyone why Lagos remains a cultural heavyweight.

1. Creativity Loves a Good Crowd

The audience showed up ready. They danced, they shouted, they participated as if the show needed them to survive, and in a way, it did.

Nigerians have a special talent for turning any performance into a shared memory, and this year they proved that once again.

The room felt alive in a way you only understand when you are physically present.

2. The Cavemen Know How to Hold a Stage

From the moment The Cavemen stepped into the light, the room shifted. Their highlife sound carried nostalgia but somehow felt new, fresh, and completely Lagos.

It is hard to explain how they manage to make their performances feel like both a village festival and a city concert, but they do it effortlessly.

3. New Voices Are Not Waiting for Permission

Beyond the headliners, ART X Live featured Llona, Amaeya, Braye, and Yosa.

Each artist brought something distinct, whether it was soft emotion, experimental rhythm, or full-throttle performance energy.

Together, they created a lineup that felt balanced and honest. The show did not try to impress. It simply presented talent and allowed them to shine.

4. Intentional Curation Changes Everything

Lanre Masha and Ayo Lawson crafted a show that moved smoothly from one moment to the next. Nothing felt abrupt. Nothing felt rushed.

It was the type of direction that makes the audience comfortable enough to relax into the experience and trust what is coming next.

5. The VIP Preview Still Has Quiet Power

Before the music started and before the crowds arrived, ART X Lagos hosted a VIP Preview that brought together a mix of cultural leaders, government officials, art collectors, ambassadors, and longtime supporters.

It was a reminder that art fairs are not only about the moment. They are also about the relationships, the commitments, and the long-term vision behind them.

6. Tokini Peterside-Schwebig Knows How to Set a Tone

As founder and chairperson, Tokini delivered a message that felt grounded and confident.

Ten years is no small feat, especially in a city that changes its rhythm every other week, yet ART X Lagos has remained a stable cultural landmark.

Her speech created space for reflection without slowing the energy of the evening.

7. Africa’s Creative Leaders Are Paying Attention

Their presence showed commitment, not obligation, and added weight to the celebration.

8. Art Can Still Surprise You

Throughout the fair, artworks from masters and rising voices filled the rooms with colour, texture, and meaning.

Visitors encountered pieces from J. D. ’Okhai Ojeikere, Bruce Onobrakpeya, Dennis Osadebe, Nengi Omuku, Arinze Stanley, Victor Butler, Edson Chagas, and several others.

Some pieces invited quiet reflection. Others demanded attention with bold forms and unexpected ideas. Every room felt like an invitation to pause and genuinely see.

9. The Development Forum Was More Than a Side Event

Curated by Fikayo Adebajo, the Forum brought artists, curators, culture workers, and collectors together for honest, solution-focused conversations.

The sessions were practical and clear, and the advisory rooms led by Amanda Iheme, Nadine Siegert, and Bénédicte Alliot offered guidance that felt useful for artists who want long-term growth.

It became a space where creativity met structure, and where artists could find next steps instead of only inspiration.

10. Lagos Still Knows How to Make Art Feel Like a Celebration

By the end of the night, one thing was clear: this city does not merely host an art fair.

It hosts a cultural moment that pulls people from around the world into a shared experience of music, movement, colour, community, and imagination.

ART X Lagos at 10 reaffirmed something many Nigerians already know: creativity here is abundant, confident, fearless, and future-driven.
